Wages of construction workers and prices of building materials in the 1st quarter of 2022


MACAO, May 3 – Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicates that the average daily wage of construction workers decreased by 1.5% quarter-on-quarter to MOP787 in the first quarter of 2022 The average daily wage of local workers (MOP968) and non-resident workers (MOP716) fell by 1.9% and 0.3% respectively.

In terms of main occupations, the average daily wages of welders (MOP823), concrete formwork carpenters (MOP762) and ironworkers (MOP778) fell by 8.9%, 6.9% and 6.6% respectively. quarter over quarter, while wages for Painters (MOP858), Air Conditioning Mechanics (MOP902) and Water/Gas Installers (MOP830) increased by 6.8%, respectively, 3 .8% and 2.7%.

After discounting the effect of inflation, the real wage index for construction workers (95.8) in the first quarter of 2022 fell by 3.2% quarter-on-quarter, that of local construction workers (97.7) decreasing by 0.4%.

As for construction materials, the average prices of spiral and round rebar (6,640 MOP per ton) and concrete (1,094 MOP per cubic meter) in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 2.4 % from quarter to quarter. The building materials price index for residential buildings rose 2.0% quarter-on-quarter to 125.0; the price indices for emulsion paint, equipment and pipes increased by 8.8%, 4.1% and 3.8% respectively, while the price index for sand fell by 1.0% .
