PROJECTS: United Arab Emirates to build world’s first conductive concrete building

0

The world’s first building to be constructed of conductive concrete will be constructed at the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI), following 14 years of research by a team from the American University’s College of Engineering of Sharjah (AUS).

Conductive concrete provides EMP protection [electromagnetic pulses] buildings housing sensitive equipment and information.

SRTI said in a press release that the planned new building represents a collaborative effort between the government, private and academic sectors on park lands, with Alec Contracting Company executing the work.

The AUS research team is led by Professor Sherif Yehia of Civil Engineering and Professor Nasser Qaddoumi of Electrical Engineering

Qaddoumi said, “Conductive concrete can be the most effective solution to protect critical civilian and military infrastructure (such as data centers, power plants, security centers, etc.) against electromagnetic threats ranging from radiation electromagnetic pulses”.

Yehia added: “After 14 years of research, testing and verification of specifications, we have now reached the stage of experimentation and practical application by constructing a building with this new cement mixture, which is a type of concrete improved by adding certain materials in precise proportions.”

The main advantages of conductive concrete, the statement notes, are shielding against EMP without the need for special additions, improved mechanical properties, relatively lower costs compared to other shielding techniques and the possibility of being produced in the form of concrete. prefabricated units.

The statement said design and construction guidelines for future projects and implementation will also be developed by the research team.
