Councilor’s men loot building materials during DNCC campaign and assault journalist

Supporters of a councilor carried away construction elements during a campaign by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), launched on Thursday to reclaim a body of water in the Khikhet district of the capital.

The incident occurred in the presence of Mayor Atiqul Islam and other DNCC officials.

Supporters of Ward 17 Councilor Ishak Miah carried away iron gates, bags of cement and other building materials from a building site being demolished by the DNCC.

They also got their hands on tables and chairs and kept them in a temporary hut at the site.

City authorities were demolishing the site as part of the ongoing campaign to reclaim water bodies in and around the city.

A journalist from the Bengali daily Prothom Alo, Drinja Chambugang, was also assaulted by supporters of the mayor for having captured images of the looting.

The personal assistant of the mayor (PS) Hasmat Ali uttered insulting remarks against the journalist. They also grabbed the reporter and tried to delete the footage.

Chairman of the Urban Development Journalists Forum of Bangladesh (UDJFB) Amitosh Paul and Secretary General Shohel Mamun have expressed concern over the attack on the journalist.
